The Rutgers Scarlet Raiders volleyball team defeated the New Jersey Institute of Technology volleyball team on Tuesday ending the team's 10-game losing streak.

The game began with service by Rutgers' John Keller, leading to the Raider's lead that would continue throughout the game. Keller, along with other players, like Dane Mulligan, Marcin Midura, and Eduardo Hernandez played aggressively winning the first set 30-22.

Unlike previous games with Princeton and Springfield where Rutgers' loss seemed inevitable, the Raiders talent and charisma seemed unmatched. NJIT players flailed wildly at Rutgers' players' spikes and aces, and most of the home team's blocking and score attempts were successful. Dig attempts by the opposing team proved unsuccessful again and again.

The Rutgers team seemed to have done their homework and was well aware of the weaknesses of their opponent. Every now and again there was a tie in the game between the two schools, whose campuses border each other, but it would be short lived as the Scarlett Raiders took the lead every time.

While members of the Rutgers University - Newark sparsely congregated fan base cooed and heckled the opposition, the team dug into the scoreboard in the second and third set. At times, NJIT's coach sat down and laughed as he looked on at his players. Other times he critiqued the plays and gave direction.

Members of NJIT's audience also heckled their opposition, but with little effect. The Scarlett Raiders took the second set and the third set, winning the game (3-0). Perhaps recognizing its advantage or perhaps because it was time, the team's coach, Karl France, even put in a player rarely played, Parth Vedawala.

Attendee's summed up the match with specifics, attributing problems to strategy and technique.

"The NJIT team was simply outplayed," said Arnie Visaro, a sophomore at Essex County College attending the game. "Also, they were focused only on one of Rutgers' players which proved detrimental to their success."

Justine Lopez, a freshman of Fashion Institute of Technology, who said she came to "check out" a friend on the NJIT roster pointed out the statistics of the two teams as well.

"The two teams are fairly new, though you can see that Rutgers-Newark's team's blocking was more coordinated, and their spikes are a beast," she said.

Speaking of beast, the Scarlet Raiders play Juniata College of Pennsylvania, a school they have already lost to this season, and who may again turn the tables of advantage and disadvantage.
