Last year's presidential race motivated Ambika Sukul to organize Rutgers-Newark's first student democratic organization. Only a year in existence, RU Democrats have offered their help to Corzine's campaign and actively assisted NJPIRG with distributing voter registration forms.
The RU Democrats, or RU Dems, gather each week to discuss national and state issues on campus. Currently with ten members, the group hopes to expand.
Recent discussions have been about the heated gubernatorial race in New Jersey, particularly the use of slander campaigns on both sides.
On November 3, election day for the gubernatorial race, NJPIRG and RU Democrats, will be walking around discussing their organizations to others interest in joining their group.
NJPIRG will be hosting an election site on campus from 5-8 pm and RU Democrats would be helping them on Nov. 3.
"Governor Corzine's plan for New Jersey makes him the better candidate," said Jay Patel.
Members mutually agreed that health care is the major issue nationally and statewide. Corzine advocates that he will provide better health care for NJ residents, if elected.
Although, the organization is defined as Democrat, others are invited to partake in discussions. The RU Dems have tried to model their conversations on forums.
At one such meeting, the topic veered from unions and anti-gun laws to university health and insurance and parking.
"I decided to call emergency units for striking pain in my ankles," said Vicky Russo in a story about the health insurance offered by the university. "After that I found University insurance would not be accepted by UMDNJ if I called the ambulance," she added.
Rutgers police needed to be notified for her to properly benefit from university insurance, said Russo. She disclosed that all notification needed to be handled by Rutgers authorities upon arrival to UMNDJ to receive emergency benefits.
The flaws of commuting to campus were discussed, the tuition hike, the cost of housing, the cost of books. Even politically-minded students cannot escape the facts of daily student life and its grievances.
RU Democrats can be contacted via email at RUdemocrats@gmail.com. The organization has yet to declare a destined meeting point, but meetings are held Wednesdays at 4 p.m.
