Though the future of the economy is looking less bleak, its current state is still unfavorable. In every class, the individual is suffering in some way from this current state of affairs, undoubtedly not the least of whom is the college student. As with everything else, college tuition is on the rise; it was just recently- in July of 2008-that an 8.5 percent tuition increase for RU was approved due to a 10.8 percent cutback in state funding. So what is the Rutgers student to do when, after scholarships, grants and loans, and some help from the folks still is not enough to cut it? There are plenty of options to keep you from feeling handcuffed to the campus bookstore's prices.

Evrim Esen of Fort Lee, New Jersey created one alternative: RUbooklistin.com. Though the name is RU, the site is not just for Rutgers students. However, the book listings are solely for/from students in New Jersey institutions, so unlike other websites, there is no risk of finding a desperately needed book only to discover that acquiring it would call for a four-hour out-of-state trek.

Always striving to "…make improvements every day", Esen had RUbooklisting available for use a little under one month ago. Esen said he and his partner decided to start this site in November in an effort to help out their fellow students. He noticed-as did many other students who have tried this route-that other sites charged to list items, and then took a percentage of the listing price if the item was sold. The goal of RUbooklisting is to "…eliminate all costs involved in book auction transactions." As of now, all Rutgers students (in any campus), NJIT, Bergen and Essex County Colleges, and UMDNJ students have access to the site, but Esen and his partner have plans to make access regional in the future. The web address' inclusion of "RU" is an effort to show some school pride, as both co-founders are Rutgers students.
