Q&A: GETTING TO KNOW YOUR R-N STAFF!
A conversation with: Vanessa (Miss) Scott, U. Square Dorm Security
Issue date: 3/11/08 Section: Page Two
Observer: How long have you been working at Rutgers-Newark, and how do you like it here?
Miss Scott: About two years. I like it; I like working with kids
Observer: Tell us a little bit about your experience working as security; tell us exactly what you do.
Miss Scott: First I check ID when guests come in; I check ID when the residents come in; I make sure they have the right tags on their ID; that the guests have the proper ID: e.g. driver's license - it has to be current.
Observer: A lot of the kids like to talk about your interactions with them. Why don't you tell us a little something about this? You don't hold back with them…
Miss Scott: (laughs) They're children! They're adults, but…I like them because they remind me of my kids. They're always trying to get over. And I say what I feel to them; I speak to them like a mother; I hear them. You know, I do like them because they're kids and they're growing, so you've gotta deal with them.
Observer: How do they react back?
Miss Scott: They tell me, "Oh my, Miss Scott, you talkin' like my mother!" or "Oh Miss Scott you remind me of my mother!" or "Oh Miss Scott, we love to hear you talk!"
Observer: What has been your best experience working at R-N?
Miss Scott: My brother passed away two weeks ago…and they were so compassionate. I was shocked - they were so compassionate. I got more sympathy from them than I would have ever expected.
Observer: What has been your worst experience here?
Miss Scott: I haven't really had a worst experience with them. They are really good. If I get a guest that gets out of control, I'd call the police on them in a minute. I've never had a problem with a resident.
Observer: What do you like best about working here?
Miss Scott: I like the kids, I really do. I like that they're growing into adults.
Observer: Some of them try to get over right? What do you do to keep them in line?
