There is a new salon that offers the latest multi-ethnic hair styling and beauty techniques as well as spa treatments.

The décor is hip, colorful and vibrant. The patrons are from all races and social classes. This store isn't in Los Angeles, Atlanta or New York City.

This high-end beauty spot, Lash Out, is right in the heart of downtown Newark.

Lash Out, which opened on Oct. 1, is the brain child of stylist and owner India McMillon, a Newark native and nine-year stylist veteran.

This is her second salon, the first was located on South Orange Avenue (in Newark), but McMillon felt she needed a better, safer location. She chose Halsey Street for safety issues.

"You can feel safe parking your car and you don't have to worry about drug dealers," she said in the salon.

McMillon said she wants a personal and comfortable ambiance for her clients, and feels that this location can provide it.

McMillon also likes the location because she finds herself in a part of Newark where people of all walks of life can meet. Her customers are an intersection of the population of Newark.

"I have a better variety of customers, educators, students, county officials, people of all races and ages and I can give them all quality service," McMillion said.

She sees herself as a part of the "new Newark," where the different classes converge.

"I have clients from all over, clients from my last shop, the Gateway, IDT even the mayor's office," McMillon said. "Rutgers is a multi-cultural school and we do any kind of hair, so we are a perfect compliment to each other," she added.

The atmosphere of change is what she credits the ease of setting up shop to.

One of the services offered by Lash Out is Xtreme lash extension. This is a strand-by-strand extension process that takes about two hours to complete and lasts up to two months.

Xtreme lashes have been mentioned in many fashion magazines including Redbook, Jane, Bazaar and InStyle. The lashes have also been worn by celebrities like Angela Basset, who wrote a testimonial on the Xtreme Lash website.
